Amazon Ads is putting its demand side platform inside ChatGPT, and the move says more about where ad inventory is heading than about Amazon specifically. Amazon announced on September 10 that U.S. advertisers can now buy conversational ad placements inside ChatGPT through Amazon DSP, with Delta Vacations named as the pilot’s first tester. Amazon is also offering product feed ads that automatically build ad creative from an advertiser’s existing product catalog, so a brand does not need a separate creative workflow to show up inside a chat conversation.
Why it matters: this is the second major signal in a week that AI chat surfaces are becoming a standard line item rather than an experiment, after ChatGPT Ads itself passed $1 billion in run rate. What is different here is the buying mechanism: Amazon is not building its own chat ad unit, it is routing its existing advertiser base and DSP tooling into someone else’s chat surface, the same posture it has taken toward every other publisher’s inventory for a decade. “Conversational ads represent the fastest growing engagement opportunity for brands to reach new and existing audiences,” said Chris Conetta, director of omnichannel supply at Amazon DSP.
The original insight for a marketing leader: Amazon just became the easiest on ramp into ChatGPT advertising for any brand that already has an Amazon DSP seat, which means the decision of whether to test chat commerce ads no longer requires standing up a new platform relationship. Katrin Koenig, president of Delta Vacations, framed the appeal in travel terms: “Travel planning is becoming increasingly personalized, and travelers expect experiences that feel relevant.” The category to watch next is whether other DSPs strike the same kind of arrangement, or whether Amazon’s existing scale in retail and travel advertisers gives it a lasting first mover advantage inside chat interfaces the way it built one inside search years ago, a dynamic already visible in how DSPs are converging on the same AI copilot features.
