ChatGPT’s advertising business crossed a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in under 200 days since launch, according to data tracked by Sensor Tower and reported by PPC Land. The platform is now running roughly $83 million a month through ads, with ad density per user up 163 percent between April and August and the pool of unique US advertisers growing an average of 43 percent month over month across the same stretch, reaching about 1,200 distinct advertisers in the US in August alone and 7,378 globally in a single week in mid-July.

The more telling number is not the run rate itself but the shift in who is buying. Shopping and retail spend, the category that dominated ChatGPT’s early ad mix, fell from 37 percent to 21 percent of spend between April and August, while financial services spend rose from 2 percent to 13 percent over the same period, with software, travel, and health and wellness also gaining share.

That rotation matters more than the headline figure. Financial services is typically the slowest, most compliance-cautious category to move into a new ad surface, the same caution that kept banks and lenders off programmatic display for years after other verticals committed real budget. A financial services advertiser base scaling into ChatGPT ads this quickly signals the platform has already cleared brand-safety and compliance review well ahead of what the run-rate number alone suggests about the channel’s maturity. For a marketing leader weighing a dedicated budget line versus a test-and-learn one, that is the more useful data point under the billion-dollar headline.

Marketers evaluating the channel should treat it as its own surface with its own measurement approach, not a repurposed search or social campaign, given how differently its category mix and density curve are already moving less than seven months in. This publication has previously covered the protocol now running AI-native checkout behind the scenes and regulators reclassifying ChatGPT as a search engine, both of which shape how this new ad surface will be measured and governed going forward.
