Publishers have spent the past year making their pages easier for AI crawlers to read. Mobian and Time Inc. just took the next step: selling an ad format built to be read by an AI agent instead of a person. “We just served what we believe is the world’s first ad designed and targeted specifically to an AI agent,” said Jonah Goodhart, co-founder and CEO of Mobian, in the company’s announcement of the product, called Agent Ads.

The ad itself is a machine-readable block of sponsor-labeled, cited brand facts placed on Time’s markdown pages, the plain-text versions of its articles that publishers increasingly maintain for AI crawlers. Ally and the Project Management Institute are the first advertisers. Mobian says the format carries no hidden instructions or layout manipulation aimed at gaming an AI system’s output, and the sponsor is identified in the first line. Goodhart said the underlying problem is that “AI systems are already forming opinions about brands, but the information they rely on can be outdated, incomplete, inconsistent, or simply wrong.” A Mobian study of more than 750 brands found roughly 17% of the sources AI engines cited about them conflicted with the brand’s own facts.

Why it matters: this is a genuinely new ad unit, not a repackaged banner. It assumes the reader is increasingly software, an AI agent doing product research on a person’s behalf, and that the advertiser’s job is getting verified facts in front of that agent rather than catching a human eye. If agentic commerce keeps growing the way publishers building ad inventory for AI agents suggests, agent-targeted formats stop being a novelty and start being a category.

The original insight is what this implies about measurement. Mobian scores brands on three axes, visibility, favorability and accuracy, with no equivalent in traditional ad measurement, since a human impression doesn’t need to be “accurate” the way a fact block fed to a language model does. It arrives as publishers are already fighting to keep AI crawlers from taking their content without compensation. Agent Ads answers that fight differently: charge for access instead of blocking it.
