Fluent, the NASDAQ-listed commerce media company, has named Jeanniey Walden its Chief Marketing Officer. Walden spent 30-plus years in marketing and commerce roles at Rite Aid, Thrifty Ice Cream, Barnes & Noble, JCPenney, Mercer and DailyPay, and most recently founded Liftoff Enterprises after hosting a nationally broadcast retail show. She had already been serving on Fluent’s board of advisors before taking the operating role.
The appointment matters because of where Fluent’s revenue actually sits: commerce media, the identity-resolved advertising Fluent runs across digital and physical retail channels, now accounts for 63% of the company’s total consolidated revenue as of its most recent quarter, on an annual run rate above $125 million. A company that far along in the shift from lead-gen advertiser to commerce-media operator is no longer hiring a CMO to run brand campaigns. It is hiring someone whose entire career sits inside retail, loyalty and commerce operations, the same profile ad-tech companies buying their way into in-store commerce are increasingly recruiting for.
The original insight is what that says about the CMO title itself: at a company this concentrated in commerce media, “marketing” and “monetization” have functionally merged into one job, and the hiring pattern, a commerce operator rather than a brand marketer, is the tell. That mirrors what is already happening at restaurant chains folding loyalty programs into the CMO’s remit. “The future of media requires balance between results and customer experiences,” Walden said of the role, a framing that treats the two as competing priorities rather than one automatic outcome. CEO Don Patrick said Walden “understands our customers because she has been one of them.”
