Kroger has turned its AI shopping assistant into an ad placement on day one, rather than waiting to prove the product first and monetize it later. The assistant, which helps shoppers plan meals and build baskets around a budget or dietary need, launched across most Kroger banners on August 3 with product listing ads built in from the start, automatically pulled into advertisers’ existing Search and Browse PLA campaigns with no separate setup required.
The sequencing is the story. Walmart waited roughly a year after launching its Sparky assistant before introducing ads, and OpenAI took years to bring advertising into ChatGPT. Kroger skipped that gap entirely. “It’s another mechanism to just get the right brands and products in front of consumers quickly,” said Brian Spencer, marketing director for Kroger Precision Marketing. Nick Hamilton, senior vice president at Kroger Precision Marketing, framed it as a response to how shopping itself is changing: “As ecommerce evolves beyond the search bar, KPM’s solutions are evolving alongside it,” adding that the launch “gives advertisers another way to be discovered in the exact moments when shoppers are planning meals and building their baskets.”
The original insight here is about where retail media’s growth is actually coming from next. The first generation of retail media was built on search and browse, essentially digital shelf space. Conversational assistants create a third surface, one where a product gets recommended inside a meal plan or a dietary constraint rather than surfaced against a keyword. That is a fundamentally different kind of ad placement to sell and to measure, and Kroger folding it into existing PLA infrastructure, instead of building a separate ad unit, suggests retailers see it as an extension of retail media rather than a new category requiring its own budget line. Expect competitors to follow the packaging once their own assistants clear internal review. Related: Amazon’s Q2 results already showed agentic shopping moving real ad dollars, and most retail AI shopping assistants have been converging on the same underlying model, which makes Kroger’s speed to monetize a more notable differentiator than the assistant itself.
