Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), which powers a “Universal Cart” enabling checkout across Search, Gemini, and Maps, is expanding beyond retail into hotel booking and food delivery. Checkout capabilities are rolling out to Canada and Australia in coming months, with UK expansion planned. YouTube shopping ads now support UCP-powered checkout, and buy-now-pay-later options from Affirm and Klarna are embedded directly into Google Pay. Participating retailers include Nike, Sephora, Target, and Walmart.

The protocol means the ad IS the checkout. A user searching in AI Mode can book a hotel directly from the search result. A conversation in Google Maps can end with a food delivery order. Shopping ads on YouTube convert immediately without leaving the video. Google also introduced AI performance insights in Merchant Center and a new “Ask Advisor” feature connecting Google Ads and Analytics data for business-tailored recommendations. Retailers can now use conversational attributes to update product descriptions, reflecting how people naturally search in the AI era.

For marketers, UCP forces a fundamental rethinking of what “conversion” means. When the funnel collapses to a single interaction, traditional attribution models, landing page optimization, and checkout funnel analysis become irrelevant for UCP-enabled transactions. The advertising layer and the commerce layer are merging into a single agent-mediated surface. Brands that still separate their media strategy from their commerce infrastructure will find themselves structurally disadvantaged as Google scales this model globally.
