Europe’s digital ad market just posted its fastest growth in years, and the money is not spreading evenly. It is concentrating in the formats that promise simplicity over control.

IAB Europe’s AdEx Benchmark 2025 report, now in its twentieth year and built from data across 30 national markets, found European digital advertising spend grew 10.5% to reach 131 billion euros in 2025. Video led the gains, up 19.6% to 34.0 billion euros and now accounting for more than half of all display investment on the continent for the first time. Social advertising grew 19.2% to 35.5 billion euros, with social video the fastest-growing format in the report. Retail media grew 16.7% to 13.3 billion euros, and programmatic display grew nearly twice as fast as the overall display market. Standard banner and native display was flat to declining.

The reason this matters beyond the topline number is what it reveals about buyer behavior. Report author Daniel Knapp described the shift as a move toward simplification: advertisers, and particularly the smaller and mid-market brands using self-serve tools, are gravitating toward channels that require less ongoing management of complexity, video and social feeds, retail media networks, programmatic pipes, rather than the fragmented display buys that once dominated European budgets. That is the same consolidation pressure already reshaping retail media’s push into owned inventory and forcing the programmatic supply chain toward more transparency as buyers concentrate spend in fewer, more accountable channels.

The original insight here is not that Europe is growing, most mature ad markets grew in 2025, but that growth is now a proxy for platform trust. Channels winning share are the ones that can prove where the money went with the least manual reconciliation. For marketing leaders setting 2027 European budgets, the benchmark to watch is not total spend but the widening gap between formats offering built-in measurement and the ones still asking buyers to stitch it together themselves.
