Smartly named Kelly Uphoff its chief technology officer on Oct. 8, putting a former Netflix data science leader in charge of the engineering team behind its creative and media platform.
Uphoff will lead Smartly’s global engineering organization and succeeds Lauri Tarkkala, according to Smartly’s announcement. The release says her remit includes “continuous decision intelligence for marketers across the campaign lifecycle.” At Netflix she led Data Science and Engineering teams across machine learning, predictive modeling and experimentation. Most recently, at Tala, she led the platform’s transformation.
Why it matters
Smartly’s CEO, Laura Desmond, framed the hire around learning loops. She said Uphoff understands that “every signal is an opportunity to learn and make the next decision better.” The release credits Tarkkala’s tenure with rearchitecting Smartly’s technology foundation, advancing its unified platform and integrating the acquisitions of Ad-Lib.io, Viralspace.ai and INCRMNTAL.
The job description in the release names no ad serving or creative tooling milestone. It names decisioning. That fits the wider shift we covered in Agentic AI Enters Ad Buying, One Workflow at a Time, where platforms are moving individual buying and optimization steps to software.
The original insight
This is our reading, not Smartly’s. When a vendor says its product learns from every action, the useful questions for a buyer are about the loop itself. Which signals feed it? Where do its decisions get logged? Can your team see why a budget or creative changed? A CTO whose background is data science suggests the loop sits near the center of the roadmap, so those questions belong in the next renewal conversation. Our earlier piece on how Amazon, Meta, Discord and Google hand more ad buying to software covers the same question for the large platforms.
